Biology ★ Legendary: one of the biggest ideas in science
DNA
DNA is a code of four letters on a twisted ladder, and each half tells you the other.
A pairs with T · C pairs with G
Why it works
The ladder's rungs are pairs of bases: A always with T, C always with G. Split the ladder down the middle and each half is a template for building a new partner.
Rosalind Franklin's X-ray photo showed the twisted shape; Watson and Crick used it to build the model.
What it lets you predict
One strand gives you the other strand.
How tests ask about it
- Write the partner strand
- How a cell copies DNA
Try it
One strand reads A T T G C. What does the partner strand read?
Show the answer
T A A C G.
